Travel Precautions

When traveling, especially to areas with higher rates of pertussis or limited healthcare access, consider getting the Repevax vaccine if:
- You're traveling to countries experiencing whooping cough outbreaks
- You'll be in close contact with infants or young children during your travels
- Your last pertussis-containing vaccine was more than 10 years ago
- You're pregnant and planning to travel (consult with our travel health experts)
- You're visiting areas with limited healthcare infrastructure
- You're planning extended stays or working in healthcare/childcare settings abroad

Signs & Symptoms

Pertussis (Whooping Cough): Severe, prolonged coughing fits followed by a distinctive "whooping" sound when breathing in, vomiting after coughing episodes, exhaustion, and difficulty breathing between coughing spells.

Diphtheria: Sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, and a thick gray coating in the throat or nose that can cause breathing difficulties.

Tetanus: Muscle stiffness and spasms, particularly in the jaw (lockjaw), difficulty swallowing, fever, and severe muscle contractions.

Polio: Fever, headache, vomiting, fatigue, neck stiffness, and pain in the limbs. In severe cases, paralysis and breathing difficulties.

The Vaccination

The Repevax vaccine is given as a single injection into the upper arm muscle. For optimal protection:
- Adults typically need one dose if they haven't had a pertussis-containing vaccine in the last 10 years
- The vaccine can be administered alongside other travel vaccines
- Side effects are generally mild, including soreness at the injection site, mild fever, and fatigue
- Full protection develops within 2-4 weeks after vaccination
- Suitable for adults and adolescents from 10 years of age
- Particularly recommended for adults who will be around infants
