These diseases are still however widespread throughout Central Africa and is also present in Asia, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Nigeria.
Travel Precautions
When traveling to areas with higher risk of diphtheria, tetanus, or polio, it's crucial to ensure your DTP vaccination is up to date. Consider getting the vaccine if:
- You're traveling to countries with limited healthcare infrastructure
- Your last DTP booster was more than 10 years ago
- You're planning adventure activities with increased injury risk
- You'll be in close contact with local populations in endemic areas
- You're travelling for extended periods or to remote locations
- You're visiting areas where polio transmission may still occur
Signs & Symptoms
Diphtheria: Sore throat, fever, swollen neck glands, and a thick gray coating in the throat or nose that can cause breathing difficulties and potentially fatal heart and nerve complications.
Tetanus: Muscle stiffness and spasms, particularly in the jaw (lockjaw), difficulty swallowing, fever, and severe muscle contractions that can be life-threatening.
Polio: Fever, headache, vomiting, fatigue, neck stiffness, and pain in the limbs. In severe cases, it can cause paralysis and breathing difficulties.
The Vaccination
The DTP vaccine (Revaxis) is given as a single injection into the upper arm muscle. For optimal protection:
- Adults should receive a booster every 10 years
- The vaccine can be given at the same time as other travel vaccines
- Side effects are generally mild, including soreness at the injection site and low-grade fever
- Full protection develops within 2-4 weeks after vaccination
