The Mean Cell Volume (MCV) test evaluates the average size of your red blood cells. Since red blood cells transport oxygen throughout your body, it’s essential for them to be of the appropriate size to perform their function efficiently.

An elevated MCV indicates that your red blood cells are larger than normal, which may indicate certain types of anemia or other health conditions. Conversely, a decreased MCV suggests that your red blood cells are smaller than normal, which can also be indicative of anemia or other health issues.
